Four Corners - A Celebration Honoring the Life of O'Neal Mathews age 81 will be held Saturday, June 6, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Trinity United Methodist Church, 101 Main Street, Baldwin, La, Pastor Sherry Mathews will serve as officiant.

Visitation will begin at 9:00AM at Trinity United Methodist Church, 101 Main Street, Baldwin, La, and will conclude at the time of service.

He will be laid to rest at St. John Baptist Church Cemetery, 1244 Big Four Corners Road, Jeanerette (Four Corners), La.

O'Neal Matthews, age 81, was born on Friday, September 1, 1944, in Four Corners, Louisiana, to the late Peterson Sr. and Elizabeth Alexander Matthews. At an early age, he gave his life to Christ, establishing a foundation of faith that remained with him throughout his life. Affectionately known as "Coup" by many, he was a humble man with a quiet and gentle spirit. He was not one to argue or become easily upset, choosing instead to carry himself with patience, kindness, and understanding. His calm demeanor and sincere heart earned him deep respect and love from all who knew him.

Neal attended William Street School, where he graduated in 1964 and proudly played football. He later continued his educational journey at Grambling State University, formerly known as Grambling College. He was employed by Memorial Greater Heights Hospital in Houston, Texas, from which he retired after years of dedicated service. In his leisure time, Neal found joy in collecting model toy cars and spending cherished moments with his family.

O'Neal was united in holy matrimony with his beloved soulmate, Ruby Minor Matthews, who remained faithful and devoted to him until the very end. Through their union, they formed a blended family, which Neal embraced wholeheartedly with genuine love. In return, he was embraced as true kin. Their marriage was built not only on love but on loyalty, trust, and unconditional care. His daughter and son-in-law stood faithfully by his side through every season of life. He shared a special bond with his grandson, Dedric, affectionately known as "DJ," and lovingly raised his granddaughter, Daneka, as his own daughter. Their unwavering love and devotion reflected the deep and meaningful bonds of family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandson, Timothy Johnson; his sisters, Delores "Betty" Edwards and Rose Mary Archangel; and his brother, Van Bernard Matthews.

He leaves to cherish his precious memories: his devoted wife, Ruby Matthews; his son, Ryan O'Neal Matthews (Denice) of Houston, Texas; and five daughters: Cassandra Johnson (Lamar) of Shreveport, Louisiana; Tiffany Royston (Frank) of Houston, Texas; Ameka Monique Joubert (Dedric) of Houston, Texas; Aquilla Horace (Otis Berry); and Veronica Horace of Lufkin, Texas.

He is also survived by four brothers: Peterson Matthews, Jr. of Four Corners, Louisiana; Leroy August (Doris) of Webster, Texas; Kevin Lewis; and Keith Lewis (Serna), both of Jeanerette, Louisiana; and two sisters: Rev. Sherry Matthews of Four Corners, Louisiana, and Laurie Hardin (Arthur) of Nolanville, Texas; one brother-in-law, Rev. Richard Archangel of Jeanerette, Louisiana; and three sisters-in-law: Betty Dean, Frances Caldwell, and Margie Hogan, all of Houston, Texas; grandchildren: Dedric Joubert, Daneka Horace, Cassidy Johnson of Lake Charles, LA, Chance Royston and Jordan Matthews of Houston, Texas; two godsons, Sanford Edwards of New Iberia, Louisiana, and Charles Ray Cerf of Four Corners, Louisiana; a devoted cousin, Dennis Matthews of Houston, Texas; along with a host of extended relatives and friends who find comfort in knowing that earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal.

O'Neal Matthews transitioned from this life to his heavenly home on Thursday, May 28, 2026. Though humble in spirit, Neal's life left a lasting impact. He demonstrated that strength does not require loudness and that love, faith, and loyalty are among the greatest legacies one can leave behind.
